As New Zealand's major source of official statistics, Statistics New Zealand is an excellent source for data including demographic, industrial and environmental data.  Below are links to various data sets and tools that are useful starting points.

"Elsevier Datasearch searches for research data across domains and types, from many domain-specific, cross-domain and institutional data repositories"

Gapminder.org is a not for profit website giving access to time-series data on a number of world development issues such as income, enviromental change and population growth.  This data is displayed in engaging, interactive maps.
