CAUL (the Council of Australian University Librarians) has reached an agreement for Annual Reviews to make content freely available nationally. Starting 14th June 2022, Annual Reviews content published between 2013-2022 will be openly available across Australia and New Zealand.
The Annual Reviews journals provide overviews of scientific progress across the life, biological, physical and social sciences. It is hoped that all 51 journals in the Annual Reviews portfolio will be included from 2023, but at present the journals currently included are:
Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering
Annual Review of Cancer Biology
Annual Review of Environment and Resources
Annual Review of Genomics and Human Genetics
Annual Review of Nuclear and Particle Science
Annual Review of Political Science
Annual Review of Public Health
Annual Review of Virology
This agreement is a pilot program under Subscribe to Open (S2O), a business model that converts entire volumes of a journal to open access. Annual Reviews announced early in April that they would work towards making their entire portfolio of 51 journals available worldwide in 2023 under the S2O model. Recognizing the impact of these plans, CAUL has negotiated full access in Australia and New Zealand one year earlier.
The Library would like to highlight the “national” aspect of this agreement. The S2O model allows research to be published as Open Access (S2O provides Diamond OA, meaning that the article is immediately available with no access barrier and no author fee). Annual Reviews have extended this arrangement for Australia and New Zealand by making backfile content, previously only available through institutional purchases, freely available to anyone in Australia and New Zealand.
