Library Liaison Service & Subject Librarians: Home

Subject Librarians help University students to develop information literacy, which is the set of skills related to finding, evaluating, and using scholarly information to complete assignments and conduct research.

Subject Librarians can assist students in searching for and evaluating relevant scholarly literature and other research materials for essays, reports, literature reviews, and dissertations or theses. 

Finding your Subject Librarian is easy:

• Browse the Library Subject Guides to find the Librarian for each subject

If you can't find someone who looks after your specific subject, ask Library Staff at any one of the campus libraries and we will find the right person to help you. 

The University of Otago Library supports the research, teaching, and learning activities of the University’s four Academic Divisions through its Library Liaison Service.

Subject Librarians with expertise in information resources and research skills are assigned to each Division. They work alongside academic staff to foster the development of student research skills and support the practice of academic research at all levels, in accordance with the University Library Research Skills Support Strategy.

The role of the Subject Librarian is to ensure that:

• Teaching and learning is supported and extended by leading the design, delivery, and evaluation of programs supporting information literacy and research skills development.

• Researchers gain maximum benefit from the Library’s support services.

• Library Services are developed based on a sound understanding of the user experience.

• Information resources are evaluated and selected to support users’ needs for teaching, learning and research.
