The list was originally developed to help cataloguers and descriptive archivists describe Māori materials linking students, researchers and communities to taonga / taoka using a Māori world view familiar to them.

Ngā Ūpoko Tukutuku are growing all the time with new headings added on a regular basis by Te Whakakaokao | Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Reo Māori Working Group. Visit Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa | The National Library of New Zealand's website for the latest terms added to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku.

Kurī ārahi (guide dogs) and Kurī Pirihimana (police dogs) have been accepted as new terms and their inclusion on the list. Patui (bone needles) has also been accepted as a term.
