Kurī ārahi (guide dogs) and Kurī Pirihimana (police dogs) have been accepted as new terms and their inclusion on the list. Patui (bone needles) has also been accepted as a term.

The list was originally developed to help cataloguers and descriptive archivists describe Māori materials linking students, researchers and communities to taonga / taoka using a Māori world view familiar to them.
