A beginner's guide to using Mendeley Desktop

What is Mendeley?

Mendeley is a referencing management tool that allows you to easily organise and search your personal library, annotate documents and cite as you write.

Mendeley’s word processor plugin works with Microsoft Word, Libre Office, and other popular word processors.

Why should I use Mendeley?

With Mendeley you are able to import papers and other documents from your desktop, your existing libraries or websites with ease. Mendeley automatically captures information like authors, title and publisher, which makes organisation and browsing easy.

Mendeley can be securely accessed on any computer through the desktop client, web browser, or using a mobile app. Your library is backed up in the cloud and always available to you.

Occasionally you will need to cite something that doesn’t neatly fit into any of the reference types offered by Mendeley. This could include NZ legal material, emails, podcasts, YouTube videos, maps, dictionary entries, and so on. Citing these with Mendeley can be tricky, so please contact us and we can show you some solutions.

For further instructions on using Mendeley at an intermediate level, please see our Mendeley — Beyond the Basics guide.
