Guidelines...

"Evidence-based, current clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), which are ‘‘systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances,’’ are also examples of ‘‘summary’’ level evidence (S2). A CPG should be based on comprehensive searches and appraisal of the literature (ideally current systematic reviews, if they exist), and each recommendation should be accompanied by levels of evidence." - Dicenso, A., Bayley, L., & Haynes, R. B. (2009). Accessing pre-appraised evidence: fine-tuning the 5S model into a 6S model. [Editorial]. Evidence-based nursing, 12(4), 99-101

S1 Systems

'In these [S1] computerised decision support systems (CDSSs), detailed individual patient data are entered into a computer program and matched to programs or algorithms in a computerised knowledge base, resulting in the generation of patient-specific assessments or recommendations for clinicians" Dicenso, A., Bayley, L., & Haynes, R. B. (2009)

None of these tools is licenced by the University of Otago, although all general practices should have access to computerised decision support tools. There is a list of BPAC tools available to NZ general practices in the August 2015 issue of Best Practice.

S2 Summaries

"These include clinical pathways or textbook summaries that integrate evidence-based information about specific clinical problems and provide regular updating." Dicenso, A., Bayley, L., & Haynes, R. B. (2009)

UpToDate

The University's subscription to UpToDate ceased on 30th September 2018. ALM students (4th, 5th and 6th year medical students) will be able to access UpToDate through the DHB network.
