Through Bonhoeffer's own writings and the first hand accounts of those who lived the experience with him, we understand Nazism and the Holocaust in a new light and we see a creative model for the role of the church in a 'world come of age'.

As ISIS and other extremists threaten, enslave and kill Christians, is their history in the birthplace of their faith coming to an end?
‘There is a global war against Christianity’ states Timothy Radcliffe, former master of the order of preachers. According to a Vatican report, 100,000 Christians are martyred every year. Others are harrassed, raped or attacked, and subjected to forced displacement and the destruction of their places of worship. Nowhere is the problem more severe than in the Middle East. Under Saddam Hussein, almost 1.5 million Christians lived in Iraq. Today, there are less than 200,000. ISIS have vowed to cleanse the areas they control of Christians and even outside the caliphate, Christians are regarded with suspicion and seen to represent the West. But despite the threats, some Christians are reluctant to leave. As one explains, ‘If minority groups start to leave, other minorities will become more vulnerable’.

Does God really condemn loving homosexual relationships? Is the chasm separating Christianity from gays and lesbians too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? He walks “the Camino” in spiritual pilgrimage as preparation for the mental mayhem of the polarized political climate in America. It’s against the backdrop of the elections that Zahnd exposes how the church in America has succumbed to the seduction of empire and has entangled Christianity with the Red, White, and Blue. The parallel between the modern-day United States of America and Biblical Babylon is one that is rarely drawn. Zahnd exposes the misguided culture war from evangelicals who rely on fear and scapegoating rather than the disarming qualities of humility, grace, and love. Evangelicalism’s alliance with American politics is distorting the core message of the cross and damaging the witness of Christ both nationally and internationally. The film’s crew journeys to places around the United States of America leading them deep into the heart of the story.

There are 30 transgender, ordained ministers in the United States. Six are in North Carolina. Dawn Flynn, Mykal Shannon, Liam Hooper, and Debra Hopkins fight intolerance and discrimination in the Bible Belt and battle narrow-mindedness within the religious community, fellow state natives, and their own families.
PROPER PRONOUNS is an observational film. In order to live as their authentic selves, some of their loved ones experienced personal identity crises. Each minister bravely preaches from a pulpit despite the danger they face not only as a transgender person living in the South, but also as transgender ministers navigating their way through local, state, and national governing bodies who decide what it means to be a human being.
