Capability Framework [V1]: Bibliometrics tasks

Supporting researcher-facing librarians to successfully deliver inside-out services and support.

Bibliometrics Capabilities

This example is based on data collected during the building of the framework.  It illustrates how capabilities can be mapped to Bibliometrics tasks at different levels.  Learn more about how the data was collected and analysed on the Methodology page.

Alex helps researchers to maximise the citation advantage of making research openly available.  They do this by advising researchers on what version of an output can be made open, how and when.  They help researchers upload an open copy to the Institutional Repository.

Alex provides advice on publishing strategies that account for journal metrics and where specific journals are indexed.

Alex advises researchers on how to collect bibliometric data.  They also try and support researchers to use this data appropriately.

Alex understands the limitations of bibliometric data and that different disciplines value this data differently.

Alex is proficient in the use of key databases and analytics tools for collating and extracting bibliometric and altmetrics data.  They extract bibliometric and altmetrics data for individuals and groups to help support requests for funding, promotion, research evaluation etc.

When researchers require data not easily found in the usual databases, or difficult to extract, Alex spends time looking for alternative solutions or sources.

Alex is required to create reports that not only provide bibliometric data for individuals and groups, but also attempt to add context.  These reports may benchmark research outputs and use normalised metrics to allow for cross comparison.  Often Alex will synthesize data from multiple sources.

Alex is not bound by the limitations of a GUI interface but uses APIs to extract and present data.
