Sage: OA Publishing Agreement

This 2025 uncapped agreement allows authors from participating institutions to publish open access in most of Sage's hybrid journal titles with no transactional article processing charges (APCs).

SAGE is a global academic publisher of books, journals, and a growing suite of library products and services.

Included titles

The agreement covers most of Sage's hybrid journal titles.  If you wish to publish open access, please check to ensure that your desired journal is included.

Hybrid journals that 'flip' to OA during the course of this agreement will remain available for OA publishing for the duration of the agreement.

Check the 2025 Otago OA Publishing Agreement Titles List (updated 3 Feb 2025) for your desired journal.

Article eligibility

Articles accepted from 1/1/2025 are eligible to be published open access under this agreement.

Article types

The following article types are eligible for open access under this agreement:

  • Original Research Papers
  • Review Papers
  • Brief Communications
  • Short Reports
  • Case Reports

Other charges

Sage does not charge additional fees for page and/or colour fees. Authors should always check each journal’s submission guidelines to ensure that they will not be subject to any other fees or charges.

Author eligibility

As defined by the publisher, the eligible author is:

Corresponding authors from institutions listed under 'Participating institutions' may publish immediately to open access on the publisher's platform once the article has been accepted, with no transactional APCs.

Responsible corresponding authors must include a participating institution as one of their affiliations to benefit from this agreement.

Authors will be identified as eligible for open access publishing by their:

  • institutional affiliation

Responsible corresponding authors must use their @otago.ac.nz email address when submitting an article for publication

Responsible corresponding authors should not use personal email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail). Doing so may result in delayed approval of the article or the article may not be approved to be published open access under the terms of the agreement.

During the submission of the article, the submitting author is responsible for correctly identifying the Institutional affiliation of all authors, to identify the corresponding author and to provide institutional email addresses. When entering an institutional affiliation SAGE provides the author with suggested matches during this process. The author is responsible for selecting the appropriate match.

Author rights

Articles from authors at participating institutions may be published under the following Creative Commons licenses:

  • CC BY
  • CC BY-NC

Authors retain all rights as per the CC license.

Authors retain the copyright of your Sage Choice article. Sage will publish your article under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License (CC BY-NC), which allows others to re-use the work without permission as long as the work is properly referenced and the use is non-commercial.

Further information about licenses is available on the publisher's website.

The Creative Commons licenses allow reuse (some with conditions) while protecting the authors' rights of acknowledgment as authors.

How to submit your article for open access publishing

The following instructions for authors have been provided by the publisher. Further details are available on the publisher’s website.

Each SAGE journal has its own Editorial office and its own Manuscript Submission guidelines. To submit your article, go to the list of SAGE journals, search for the one you wish to submit to, click on the Manuscript Submission guidelines tab to get details on how to submit your article. For help finding an open access journal, use the SAGE Journal Recommender – enter keywords and the title of your manuscript to search over 1,000 SAGE journals and compare those most relevant for your research. Search results can be limited to those participating in SAGE Path, a service that helps you quickly and easily find, submit, and get published with the right SAGE journal.
